Before

This blog will be, hopefully, a visual journal of the moving and remodeling of our old farmhouse in York, South Carolina. The farmhouse sits on Highway 5, which truckers use as a shortcut from Interstate 77 to Interstate 85. It used to be the most dangerous road in the county so they recently converted it to four lanes and took out the dangerous curves. The house is much too close to the road now so we decided to move it back about 100 yards and, eventually, plant a screen of trees along the road.

In the photo below you can see the backhoe beyond the fence where the house will be moved.

Our farm is named Finca de las Piedras (Ranch of the Rocks) because there are huge granite rocks scattered all over our 63 acres. We knew we might run into some rocks when we dug the basement for the house so we got a neighbor with a backhoe to come and do some digging. We found plenty of rocks!

Luckily our neighbor is very skillful with those big machines and was able to break up or move all of the big rocks until we got to the very back of where the basement will be.

We will have to fit the back of the basement between two rocks that are too big to move.

We lost several big cedar trees but will end up with a better view of the pond from the back deck of our remodeled farmhouse.

Today we applied for a building permit from York County and arranged for the house mover to be here in two weeks. This afternoon snow clouds gathered over the farmhouse and we are predicted to get several inches tonight along with much colder weather! I'll be so glad to finally have heat in the house after we get it moved!

  1. I'm so pleased you started this blog, Tina. It'll be great to track your progress. (makes anything we do to our house seem pretty darn minor)

You have a very nice blog, I love having my blog, and coming up with articles to write about. I love blogs with plenty of pictures, so I do try, though I need a better digital camera, one day!
